Here are some conversational starters to help your child understand, follow, and learn from rules
Let’s look nat the schedule. The schedule will tell you when you can do fun activities, and when you have to do work.
Here is an important rule for you: Follow the schedule. I need you to do everything that’s on the schedule- the fun stuff and the boring stuff. I’ll help you if you can’t do everything.
One way or another, we have to get everything done that’s on the schedule.
If you are having a hard time, I can make it easier for you. I can start the job that’s hard for you, and then you will finiish
i can make it easier for you. You can start the job that’s hard for you, and i can help you to finish it.
If you can’t get the job done, it might mean that you won’t get your privilege. Like, if you take too long to clean up your room, you might not get as much screen time.
I want you go have your privileges. I even want you to have at least one privilege a day. But you can have more privileges if you get all of your jobs done. I need to teach you how to get work done, before you get privileges
I’m supposed to say “no” to you some of the time. Some things are not safe. Some things are not smart. I have to say ‘no’ or ‘never’ to you if there’s a chance you could get hurt.
I have to say ‘no’ to you, to teach you about what matters and what might not matter. If i don’t use the word “no,” you won’t figure out what’s important and what’s not important.
If I don’t use the words “not now” or “later”, then i’m not teaching you how to get work done before you get a privilege.
Every time i make up a rule, it’s because i want you to not get hurt. It’s because i want you to learn how to do something really well. it’s because I want you to practice managing your frustration
If you don’t understand why i’m making a rule, let’s talk about it.
You did all of your jobs today. That means that you can have all of your privileges!
You did all of your jobs today. You even did some extra jobs! If you do extra jobs, I can give you an extra privilege! What privilege would you like to have?
