how can i make my child feel successful at homework?

Many children who are neurodiverse or who have a disability have a hard time with homework. It might be because the school day is too demanding. they might not have energy for homework at the end of the day. They might have difficulty with the Essential skills they need for successful learning. Here are some questions you can ask your child’s teacher:

  • Reading. Does my child have the reading decoding and reading fluency skills needed to be a successful reader?

  • Writing. Does my child have the encoding (spelling) skills and writing fluency needed to be a successful writer?

  • Math. Does my child have the number sense and math calculation skills needed to be successful at math?

  • How can I help my child build these important skills?

Your child might be struggling to master new content. You can ask your child’s teacher:

  • Is my child supposed to build content knowledge with this homework?

  • Should my child master new content by watching videos, or listening to audiotapes? Is there another way to master this content?

Your child might be frustrated because they never feel successful. Make sure your teacher knows. Ask your child’s teacher:

  • Can you help me to make a homework plan that will help my child feel successful?

Your child has to see that they can be successful- and that they are learning new skills. You can ask:

  • How do I create a homework plan that’s successful, but that’s also meaningful?
